History
 
Shelby County was created by an act of the Alabama Territorial General Assembly on February 7, 1818, from former Creek Indian territory ceded in the Treaty of Fort Jackson on August 9, 1814. The county was formed out of the northern portion of what was then Montgomery County.

Statistics

Over the last decade Shelby County's population has increased by more than 4,000 people every year, making it Alabama's fastest growing county and among the fastest growing in the United States. With a 2007 population estimate of 182,113, Shelby County's population has increased 83% since 1990. In population percent change Shelby County has ranked in the Top 8% among counties nationwide with populations of 100,000 or more.

Economic Base
 
Shelby County has a diverse economic base that is a reflection of the county's attractiveness for industrial and corporate development.  The Highway 280 corridor in the north central portion of the county is Alabama's fastest growing corporate location.
